Standalone on a network?  (United Kingdom)
Modified By Jean Gabin on 7/4/2008 5:35:58 AM)

I work for a community IT centre which provides training and free access to the Internet. We have 20 networked XP PCs which can all see a single Vista machine that acts primarily as a server for 'My Documents' folders, a database and other applications.

I though it would be interesting/amusing to run a standalone sim on the Vista machine, so our clients can create avatars, build, own land, etc -- and generally learn about interaction in Virtual Worlds. We don't have enough broadband capacity for multiple connections to SL or OL.

Right now it is just an idea I had 5 minutes ago. I'm sure I'm not the first one. Has anyone else tried to do something like this?

Re: Standalone on a network?  (Australia)

Hi Jean and welcome.

Setting up a standalone is really quite simple and clients from anywhere on your network should be perfectly capable of connecting.
I won't go into detail here on setting up as it's all detailed for you  here in this forum and elsewhere. If you questions can't be answered by a quick search, there are many here who can help.

I'm sure your clients will enjoy such a thing and you also would enjoy setting up and delivering the simulator.

In simple terms "Go for it!"

Our next standalone release is labelled 'intranet edition' designed for internal networks. It will be supportive of very high speed region loading, ideal for an intranet scenario.
