OL UNIVERCITY Region

Hi all,

I have a proposal as community region : A Building and Design University.

The main Idea is to provide nwebies with tools and technics for them to create new stuff en enjoy the fabulous universe of OL in creativity.

There should be several thematic buildings in the university so that people can quickly know where to go when they are searching for tips.

  • The main and thirst one will be dedicated to Viewer(s) basic usage
  • A house for modifying shape and skin
  • A building dedicated to building and house creation
  • A one for furniture (and of course, usage of sculpted prims)
  • Another one for clothing and hairs (this one would be the most difficult)
  • A last one for scripting.

We could manage to provide people with standard courses as well, published on the internet as videos, and directly accessible from the sim. Each subject going through a set of courses ("from beginning to revelation", as could have said the Genesis band )

We should define a schedule for "managers" or "teachers" to be present in sim, and define clearly who can be mentor or champion for each subject.

A great thing as well that can be done is a sort of "contest". Building or designing contest of course. The winner should gain something (not identified, I need to think about it). A sort of official OL degree . A new Bachelor could then become a mentor lol

Well, this is just an idea. I can manage to spend time for helping

  • Building the place
  • be a mentor (even with my very low skills) in building and furniture

spending time following courses as well for scripting and clothes realizations.

Please, tell me what you think about such an idea

all that's needed are people with time on their hand to create all that contents, who are knowledgeable enough in each category and able to explain in a clear and concise way... Wish you the best.

Re: OL UNIVERCITY Region

Hi all,

I've seen this kind of university in other universes. There was a complete world in ActiveWorlds called 'EcoleCob' that was dedicated to teaching Caligari Truespace (3D modeller, compatible with AW). This was working because one guy spent all his inworld time teaching, in accordance with a schedule.

In another universe called 'Village3d', the same kind of school has been defined and worked largely because of skilled participants.

I feel ready to launch this in here, ready to pass all my free time in preparing the environment and then to deliver training (up to my skills limits of course).

It has to be communautary to be working healthilly, that is to say, other skilled people to deliver their know-how.

If the community in here is not ready to spend time for this purpose, I will not waste my time. So my proposal here was for 2 things

  1. Is it a stamped 'free community' project ?
  2. Are you ready to pop in regularly to make it live ?

If one of the answers to these 2 questions is 'no', then, forget the idea.

Best regards

CatShsh

Re: OL UNIVERCITY Region

I really love this idea. It's time now that that grid is more and more stable to create and share content creations. We've got a entire world to fill. There is very skilled avatars in OL in building, texturing, scripting and 3D modeling. This could be a place to show our products and organising "teaching sessions".

The possibilities are far more important in OL than in SL, we can make the difference easily i think.

I'm your man for this project. Please let us know how is this project growing.

Reading over this post this idea definately seems to be attracting support.

I would love to help.

What would you guys like from the Openlife to support this?

Hey, Technerd and Julius, thanks for your posts.

At least 3 (4 with my wife)  of us we are interested in developping the OL.U., that sounds very promissing

Thanks as well Sakai for your supporting reply

What we'll need right now is a sort of team synchronisation. I suppose we need to design the campus with a specific style... And need to prepare exposures, need to prepare course material...

I do have several peices of ideas for that campus design, such as making a not too big place for campus buildings (people will feel weary running all these long corridors of so many rooms ), with possibly a teleport system to enhance navigation inside the campus... (thanks to my wife for this idea )

Moreover, I think there is a need for a greater place for exposures. Another parcel for a sandbox place so that trainees could test their work and practice a bit.

I'd like every of you actively participating in the project : it shall become our common project eventually, so please provide your 2pc in posts in here .

Sakai, dear sponsor, I suppose a medium sized parcel will be needed for the campus. Is it possible to have a place for this OLU ? What can be the size in sqm ? in prims ?

Kind regards

CatShsh

Re: OL UNIVERCITY Region

I second this idea. And it is quite exciting if something like this will start.

I'm a mentor in sl, and offering many scripting teaching classes, and I think that (not mentors in particular which is a kind of Religious Church), but a way for resident to share their experience in a well built environment showing the possibilities of OL.

Count me as volunteer. :)

Re: OL UNIVERCITY Region

i think this project could be better realized if it had the resources of an entire region at its disposal. this is for several reasons. first and most obviously, a realistic campus is quite vast. we can help combat the lack of space required for something of this magnitude by expanding upwards into tall buildings, and disregarding many aspects of real universities  such as full-width roads, parking facilities, administration facilities and others that arent needed in the OLG environment. however there are alot of facilities that i would like to see as part of this campus:

some sort of auditorium/convention center for holding large/scale seminars that can be "rented out" so to speak in a scheduled fasion for usage by other groups. this will increase traffic

obviously the buildings should be organized so that classes of specific interests be taught in the same place, such as one for building from basics to advanced, one for scripting, one for avatar design and so-on. they will need to be particularly large for several reasons. there needs to be proper accomodation for camera view, and space for students to work on their subject-matter as well as space for instructers to display examples.

it would be great to see alot of areas designed specifically for visual appeal and student enjoyment. an outdoor recreation area would be great, perhaps a moderate sized pond with alot of nice trees and such and park benches, etc. also some kind of campus restaurant/cafe for a more social atmosphere

high-traffic areas should have as much space between them as possible and be on seperate parcels. this reduces the ammount of chat clutter, and brings the possibility of voice chat during classes without utilizing a region-wide channel.

Re: OL UNIVERCITY Region

Large scale seminars? How many people at one time? Regions are very limited in the number of concurrent AV. Is it not 40 max per regions?

Re: OL UNIVERCITY Region

There is not a hard limit to concurrent users however, over time the stable number will grow .

I'm quite sure we can initially kick this off with a region. I'll talk it over and see where we can put it.

I would *hint that if it were to grow larger and be popular we would be happy to push it onto a Private Cluster (4 regions), perhaps some RL educators or institutions would be interested in supporting?

It would be great to have a meeting in world so i can find out some more info and other interested people could attend and discuss as well. Please feel free to propose a time.

Re: OL UNIVERCITY Region

i know that is the limit in Second Life yes. whether or not the limit is the same in OpenLife or if such a limit exists is beyond my ability to say. Sakai can answer that one. As far as the prospect of so many people in a region, even 40 is a rare occurance that only really happens when there is some sort of Linden public meeting. What are the chances of getting 40 people who arent all Foundation Residents to gather for one topic in OpenLife anyway ;-)

Re: OL UNIVERCITY Region

Well, I suppose that many ones are interested in the topic...

I just wait to having the space for developping the environment :)

in fact, I can give alot of time during week ends, not that much in the working days :(

Moreover, I just discover that the grid is not stable enough for the moment (Loosing of appeareance, or my viewer regularly disconnects...)

Sakai, if you have news regarding a spot where the project can dwell, please let us know :)

while on the subject of what would be required of the grid itself in order to do this, i believe that it will be very difficult to manage this project without Groups being fully functional. unless we are all willing to put our trust in one person for this, which i personally am not unless its sakai. it cant really be a community-ran project unless its structured so that a group of people makes collective decisions based on what is thought to be in everyones best interest

as far as the group structure i was thinking:

Dean: respectfully a figurehead position. the group leader should be considered an "emergency power" position so that if anything should ever go wrong with the land, or a member, there is something to fall back on. given the nature of such a position, i nominate sakai to be the honorary Dean so that he can keep us all in line

Administrators: comprised of the forerunners of the project, the people who put in the most time and effort into its completion. responsible for the immediate comings and goings, as we cant fall back to sakai for everything. decision making is done in a council/board of trustees method as to prevent one or two people from trying to make decisions without consent

Instructors: this is fairly obvious. all of the designated instructors who have passed the administrations criteria for teaching a cource. have moderate group rights as to keep peace in class and keep their particular sections of the sim maintained

Staff: non-instructor positions such as document keeping and other secretarial positions, as well as land maintainance (ex. cleaning the sandbox area and removing excess prims)

and ofcourse students

Re: OL UNIVERCITY Region

I think to get help keep things organised.

It might be a good thing to call it the Openlife Community Learning Centre.

  • Offer Workshops.
  • Offer Tutorials.
  • Back it up with documentation and information on the public wiki here.

Clearly some things may be difficult without groups but there are work arounds. And using the wiki to tie it together and I can organise access to the events module for project organisers to post events. (alternatively can email me with them too).

Sound good when is the meeting?

Re: OL UNIVERCITY Region

i appologize if i seem someone stuborn and resolute about my ideas towards this project. when i was still participating in Second Life, allbeit Teen Second Life because of my age at the time, i encountered a campus there very much based on the ideas that were coming up with for this one, and i was quite impressed with the system that they used there. quite a shame that its owners couldnt afford to maintain the land and it just vanished.

Re: OL UNIVERCITY Region

I guess that is one of the major obstacle to any education oriented project, be it in RL or virtual world: money.

Another obstacle: demand.

If the size of the project far exceed the demand (or interest) for it, it won't last, or at best will just barely be active.

Education about building basics in OL can be handled with displays and notecards. Volunteers can be available during peak periods to give short tutorial or answer questions, but repeating the same things over and over again to beginners can become boring fast. So volunteer rotation becomes necessary.

Just some ideas off the top of my head...
