yea i took the volunteer issue into consideration, perhaps a system of signing on for 2 weeks or perhaps a month at a time. for example if i were to teach a basic building course, it would only be a 3 night a week sort of thing that could be done in 1 week. this gives 4 opportunitys for someone to participate, and since it would be a requisite for alot of other courses, such as archetecture or prim-based avatars, it would be a fairly important class for beginners.
in terms of money, i imagine that the overall inworld costs will be regulated more by spontainious need than by fixed payments of any sort. sakai has already offered to provide atleast a single region under the community region program, so a direct cost there has been taken care of (thankyou sakai). i can imagine a couple scenerios where somethings such as advanced scripts might need to be purchased on behalf of the institution. perhaps some sort of foundation, or atleast a treasurer among the admin group could be in place for handling the monetary needs.
in terms of making profit for the benefit of the institution, its possible that some small but reasonable charges could be strategically implimented, but first and foremost the educational opportunity should remain free if at all possible. a donation system could be implimented for those who enjoyed their experiances. also i mentioned earlier, it would be nice to see one or two recreational facilities, such as a cafe, on campus for enjoyment. perhaps this could be handled by a 3rd party, and we do it based on a monthly payment for the space on the region to run the business, assuming it meets our criteria for a suitable facility |

| If this UNIVERCITY was like a university, the "courses" would be offered on a rotating basis of some kind. As they were repeated, they might be different to some degree but basically covering the same material. However, a lot of what I learned was basically self directed with displays and notecards and for some people a method like that might be even better...self paced learning as fast or slow as one needs to go. Add to this, the idea of a group that focuses on a particular subject area...let's say...sculpted prims (how to make) or textures or basic building....we might really have something. The idea of a group where one could receive additional tutoring in that subject would be a plus. Whether the head teacher would be available (due to time zone differences or constraints) might not matter if other staff members were available or other more experienced students or "graduates". After all, many college or university professors do have some teaching assistants. Why not here?
Charges? Tuition? I don't think I like that idea a whole lot but what else can be done to get teachers or pay for upkeep of such a place. I don't have answers for that yet. I'm more of an organizer/administrator for other things. But I do love to teach.

indeed we cannot and should not charge anything for the actual attendance, or for any of the information and/or materials available because of the freedom of information.
i also agree that for some people its easier to learn from a textbook than it is a teacher. i dont see why we cannot cover both fronts to atleast some degree
i dont really like the idea of having to pay anyone for their time and services unless it is for a specific instance, such as purchasing a well-crafted sculpture from one of the grids best builders to be placed on campus
yes it will be tough to maintain the enviroment in both physical maintainance of the region, and in keeping it adequatly staffed. obviously there are going to have to be a few select people who are willing to dedicate their time to administrating the establishment on a mostly perminant basis, atleast until they are no longer capable of it for whatever reason, then we find someone else suitable for the position needed. in terms of faculty, i still think that yes it should be done on a volunteer basis, and in a shifting method, like the whole "signing on for periods of time" thing, that way if a teacher cant come back for whatever reason, theyre only expect for a certain amount of time (ex. a week, 2 weeks, or a monthly period)
yes i think it would be helpful to have atleast 2 or 3 people specialized in each particular subject matter who can teach at different times.
like i mentioned in my previous post, for example a "basics of building" class would only take perhaps monday/wednesday/friday classes for an hour or two at best and be over in the same week. i see no reason why courses shouldnt be a mix of hands on instruction and reading material/screenshot display reference. i guess ultimatly the best way to teach a particular subject is up to the instructor, assuming it meets aproval. we should try to provide for both methods of learning. |

I am sorry the more I read this thread it goes further form what was suggested and seemed and is a great idea.
So I will break it down in to points
- the region will be free as it is a community region which in part is funded by the foundation holders and Sakai
- money for buying stuff etc where did that come form we have no economy yet and well this would and should always be a free and open project as it is for benefit to all so all donations to it would be free
- Groups irrelevant as we don’t have them so we will work round them for the time being or sit and talk for ever on it
- renting space etc not as it stands at all paying for people to teach etc no its for the good of the grid and well the land will be donated so that’s enough for what we can do now and Sakai and others will be giving time to the project maybe a group of 4 will do the overseeing in the main
- this was going to be multilingual very important note and we need as much support to that as possible
as far as other grids did this and that well they are not Openlife we have what tools we have and people power and will utilise that to best and efficient way as possible,
we will have foundation meeting next weekend and there I will personally see who is willing to help this project get off the ground and soon as talking in circles never will get things done and if its guided right form the start it will prosper and blossom as that is what Foundation are strong bases to build on as we all have endeavoured to do with Openlife grid and I would say its success so far speaks volumes too that effort by all,
So we will rally the troops and get the ball running on this and other community projects and let’s make it Happen.
I will suggest now a meeting after the foundation meeting (on this date to be arranged) but I mean as in a few days after that meeting at the latest the weekend after I will set a date but will only arrange it all for everyone that wishes to be involved with Sakai in attendance and it can then be put forward the basics to get it going and ACTION the start. |

I very much like this concept, Gitfinger. I coordinate development for university faculty who teach online and also teach a graduate class online as adjunct faculty. I am badly overextended at the moment, but would be willing and able to help whenever I have a little spare time. --Aviana |

Hi folks.
I believe this sort of thing is a must for this grid and should go ahead.
Self-paced, interactice tutorials were a great help in my learning.( Ivory Tower of Primatives, Particle Lab) Although time consuming to make, once made, they can basicly stand forever.
Putting ALL learning content in one area inworld, it would become a busy place over time. And that's a good thing! If it stands out as even half-useful, people from other grids could come here just to learn more. It's early days would not be so crowded.
I'll put my hand up to help because I'd love to create some useful content but I'm not much of a chatter and am a lousy teacher.
Anyway..I'll keep watch on what progresses and am available, till I get a job. LOL. As if!
Famous last words?.."Build it and they will come." Captain of my realm... Rox
[Goes off to make a new cap.]
Happy Gridding... |

For my 2 cents/shillings.... Some focus on Building self guided tutorials, would allow users to utilise such a project, in the times when 'tutors' are not running scheduled classes. |

A Region has been assigned for this community project.
Sunshine - Openlife Community Learning Centre.
For those interested we will start cutting up and assigning the parcels to interest participants on Saturday. So if you would like to be a part of this please come and visit. And post to here your Avatar Name and what kind of contribution you would like to make.
If you are not available for building but available for tutoring please also come let us know what kind of facilities you require. So that everyone who is volunteering for building can make what is required.

What a coincidence!! :)
Hi, Sakai, it happened that Sunshine is exactly very close to where I took a small parcel in Quartz with Gobi Greenwood and started to work for experiencing in OL and producing Freebies and tutorial material. So it's very convenient to my OL "home". :)
I'm active in SL doing tutorials, classes especially in scripting (mentors, ASL, and local groups) and so I can really participate in organizing some lessons or meetings. We need to start offering some educational material to people in OL.
However as some pointed out, if no people are participating in using the area this might end up in a dead path, so while it is important to set up some infrastructure it is also important to find out how many people will be interested in this and promote it... What about setting out some "teaching" week-ends with a predefined schedule and ask people to enlist in advance so to have an idea of participation? What about setting up a lightly moderated mailing list to follow this thread?
