Info - Importing SL Inventory
Modified By Professor Merryman on 8/19/2008 6:44:54 PM)

If you would like to import Second Life inventory into OpenLofe, you need to buy a $25.00 program, the only one I know of, that does it. It's called Second Inventory.

How to do it

I'm pretty new to the program so be patient.

Buy the program, go through the registration and installaltion process, then leave SL and open SI. Log in to SL and you will see a tab for SL Inventory. Right click on the full perm items you would like to back up. Choose Back Up Item (HD). Click click and click. Wait. You'll have to play around.

Disconnect from SL and log in to OpenLife this time. Click on the RL tab and choose the item you would like to import into OL. Double click it and click Restore. Use Advanced Restore to get the textures and scripts (be careful with scripts DANGER in OL), I won't go into too many details. Success! Great! Click click click OK OK damn click ok click ok GOT IT!

Disconnect and close SI. Log in to OpenLife as you usually do. Check your inventory. Is it there? No. Gee. What a surprise. lol.

Ask questions here. :)

I'm sure what I am saying is not spot on, but hopefully it will get us going.

I think we have some screenshots coming...

Re: Info - Importing SL Inventory

A quick reminder that according to the Openlife Terms of Use (not to mention International Copyright) you can only upload stuff that you have the IP rights to.  This means that you either have to be the Copyright holder or you must get permission from the Copyright holder.

Please note that Second Life's(tm) permissions system has no bearing on Intellectual Property and although Full Perms may make it possible to bring things from SL(tm) to Openlife it does not give you the right to do so.

Re: Info - Importing SL Inventory

I don't want to infringe on any rights, so how do I know if items are able to be transfered or not?

Re: Info - Importing SL Inventory

If you created it you can transfer it.  If you didn't create it you have to get permission from the creator to transfer it.

If you have built something yourself but it includes builds, textures, animations or scripts that were created by someone else (even full perms and freebies)  you could transfer all your own bits but would need to get permission from the creator of the build, texture, animation or script.

Some SL creators are now aware of other grids and are modifying their licences accordingly; so if you bought something recently it might expressly mention whether or not their product can be used in other grids.

If you do contact a creator to ask permission be sure to make it clear that it is only for your own build and will not become open-source because some creators are under the impression that the "Open" bit of the name means that anything in here is automaticallly open-sourced.

Re: Info - Importing SL Inventory

In some cases, it is going to be impossible receive confirmation from the creator, an example it's the case of Arcadia Asylum (http://www.irenemuni.com/foro/expo-homenaje-a-arcadia-asylum-vt808.html), who left SL very angry with the Linden's political, but left lots of fantastic's full perm freebies, under the adivise of: "If you payed for anything made by me, even for L$1, you were SCAMMED!!!".

In that case, I think than the only posibility it's to belive than to use those objects in an Open Plataform like Open Life, it's in agreement with the philosophy of the creator, and, send him to the old contact adress a note, at the same time than put a note card in the objects, with this opinion.

Re: Info - Importing SL Inventory

sad as copying is, Im sure that the wonderful builds of Arcadia Asylum would be recognised across most grids. And as such would not be sold, but freely given as was her wishes when she left SL. the are good , but I know we are capable of doing better.
