Giving avatar names and passwords out..ok?

I wanna make it easy for my students to get into OL, so I thought I would make an avatar name and password for each of them. It ould be so much easier than having them log in to the website and do everything.

ok? Please please.

I agree Gitfinger.

Whatever the intentions, although honest and good, this should not be a common practice. Personal logins are sacred. Freely given accounts are open to abuse. IMO

And what about the email address used for user details, grid info, comunication with the user? Too many problems will arise. I would suggest not doing this.

From discussions on one of the SL for Educators lists it seems that handing out pre-registered avatars is fairly common practice in educational circles.  (It is being discussed because there can be problems doing it in SL: for instance SL only allows so many avatars per day per IP address.)

Temporary logins would be nice then.

A 30 day expirary or something.

Or maybe it's a good thing which adds to the population stats.

I dunno. It's just not a done thing in a security point of view.

I really care not!

Re: Giving avatar names and passwords out..ok?

Proff, This may interest you,

This is something that I had partially discussed with Sakai as I have a private agency which is looking to use OLG to host an environment within a Cluster.  The purpose of that is a very unique one but it would require that an indidividual be able to log in to the cluster and interact with other members.  These accounts would be special accounts in as much as they would be logging in with an assigned avatar and password administered by the org.  These accounts would be changed randomly and have a certain level of basic inventory to suit this particular need/purpose.

This can be accomplished by create a "HOST ACCOUNT" for example Main ID = OLG-U_HOST-1 and that account could hold say 5 separate avatars.  The 5 avatars would be OLG-U_BOB, OLG-U_Mike, etc....  (just as example)  they would of course have a common password so this would be where the limitation is for Main Grid.  The Passwords would be scrambled on a  regular basis and the account would be issued as needed.

The other approach, With the Approval of Sakai, would require that seperate & independant Host Accounts be created at Root so OLG-U_BOB OLG-U_Mike would be the Main Account/Avatar Name with the same conditions.

Note that these accounts would be the only ones that would have access to that cluster for the purposes of that cluster.  They would NOT have access to the rest of OLG and would be restricted access by the Cluster.  These accounts would be subject to control by the ORG as they would be owned by the ORG.

This is a bit of an admin issue and currently the mechanism is not there so it would require a Manual Overide at this time by Sakai or another Admin in OLG.  But I think that the first concept is a possible option for you and as long as the "USER ACCOUNT" and "CLIENT ACCOUNT" was easily identifiable as a "Global Account" it could work.  You'd have to put furthe thought into it and discusss the options with Sakai as this woudl require some administrative intervention on his plate and he has a Full Plate as it is.

For Sakai & Others:  Would it not be prudent to be able to Host "Corporate Accounts" where there was a few limitations such as listed below"

  • A Corp account Name ID' uniquely IE: ULG-U_User-1
  • A Password that can be administered by a Master Corp Account
  • The Inventory of such an account would be adminstered by the Master Corp Account.
  • The Corp Account could NOT create additional Avatars
  • The Corp Account could be Permed or Righted (love the english) so that their access and permissions according to their Corp Level.  (Group Functionality would be needed I believe to do this)
  • Their Access could be controlled so as to either restrict or allow access to the Main Grid or Not, and access to desginated Private Clusters.

Hope it helps.

Re: Giving avatar names and passwords out..ok?

Thanks for this nice reply WhiteStar.

This is what we need in education, as Indigo was pointing out. We have whole classes that need to gain access very quickly because of a lack of class time. The avatars only need to be active for a limited time frame, maybe 16 weeks, but do need to have seperate passwords.

I don't really understand the security concerns. If my students give out their password to a hacker/griefer who comes in and wrecks things, the student would be responsibile, and heck, what are the chances?

I'd think of it as a learning experience. Then I'd try to find the kid who did it and become his best friend. :-)
