| Newbie .... and already disappointed. |
|
|
| Things that really need to be fixed before this becomes a clone of secondlife in all aspects. The Standard Viewer will not open up regardless of what i do - only the RealXtend view opens and that has major problems. Search menu needs to be fixed - keeps on telling me "0 items found". There needs to be an option in the Avatar create mode to choose what sex we want our avatar to be - Jayme is a feminine spelling, Jaime is the masculine spelling. Finally, the forum tools need to be fixed - over the last day everytime I try to enter a post, a blank screen comes back at me when i hit submit. |

Hi Jayme, I am sorry you are not happy but I suspect it is because you have the incorrect expectations of OpenLife at this time. First this is not a "Clone" of Second Life and the creators never had that desire. The Grid and all underlying code and programming is very Beta at this time and is stated so in the Home page where you first sign up.
There are however some very tallented and intelligent people working on all the issues you speak of and many more. This "World" in my opinion will be a far better place than Second Life or any of the other grids being played/worked on.
What is required here at this point is patience and a desire to expirenment and provide positive feedback :)
If you choose to use the SL Viewer you should be using the latest version,
This is the URL to the Wiki: http://www.openlifegrid.com/LearningCenter/OpenlifeWiki/tabid/58/Default.aspx
where you will find the answers to how to set up the viewer and much more. There are also some good people in chat mose times of the day to assist.
Hope this helps, Josh Noonan Founding member

| Josh, I already tried the SL Viewer option ( and yes, I do have the latest version of it) and nothing at all happens - no icon, nothing. I don't even get an option for a pdf. file. And it isn't my computer. I'm running a four year old machine with the following specs - NVIDIA GEForce 4 MX440 w/AGP8X display card, Intel 82801EB Ultra ATA, 2 x Intel Pentium 4CP0 2.80 GHz processors, MPU-401 compatible midi, Realtek AC'97 Audio card with a 10k/s Ethernet port. There should be no problems whatsoever. I understand that Openlife is in it
s infancy and there are teething problems, i just didn't expect to be having these kinds of problems in my first day. I do appreciate that each avatar gets 10k dollars, though. That does lighten the disappointment a little bit. |

She has been working on these and I have had no problem running them :)

Hi Jayme,
Be care, the login page (the one you see in the viewer) and the grid connexion are two differents keywords in the command line of the viewer.
That means what ever the viewer you use, you will get the SL login page, even if you choose to connect another grid.
A little tips to make sure that your SL avatar and OL avatar does not mixed their resources, choose differents password for each.
So whatever happen, you will be able to connect only the grid you want to.

Hi Jayme, i have been looking at your hardware specification and quite simply a GF440 is borderline hardware , this means standard SL clients will be painfull at best the only viewer i make which is tested on a GF440mx with 512ram and a AMD 3200, is Kirstens Dazzle R2, this is a standard SL browser (pre windlight ) but with a very good stability record on low memory or lower spec GPU's
Like the SL viewer it will require modification on the shortcut to point at Openlife, but on those hardware specs its really the best choice your should get framerates into double figures :)

of course the SL viewer takes you to the SL login page, that's what it's programmed for. When you start the SL viewer, it connect to the SL website to display the current status of SL and news from their blog. Not until you click on the "CONNECT" button does the SL viewer actually contacts the OpenLife grid, provided you pasted the correct loginurl into the shortcut command line.
As a reminder to all new OLG residents, and this is not said often enough, OLG is in ALPHA stage, this means don't expect everything to work 100%. Stuff gets tweaked almost on a daily basis here. Only those with patience and low expectation will find happiness here. You have to be willing to participate in the evolution of OLG, if only by just trying to build. There is not economy yet, no "give inventory" yet, attachement is being worked on. Inventory transfer just started working only days ago. There are freebies available, just take copy function works. It's a new world, enjoy seeing it grow. If you expect to open up shop and make money right away, you will be very disappointed.
I've been here 4 months, I love OLG, Sakai and his gang are doing incredible work. They live and eat OLG. Enjoy the freedom from ad-farms and land-barons while it last. Meditating Avatar

I totally agree to that! Im here for almost 4 months and the progress they made is in my eyes unbelievable! I really enjoy the quietness in here and being able to work on things. When someone thinks to see a SL they should stay in SL, because this is OpenLife and not SecondLife
If you see how many reply on a question in the forum or in the open chat! This is (still) very basic and therefor very friendly etc unlike SL.
If you want any reallife help come to the OpenLife chat and maybe one of us can help you out.......

Jayme I am afraid your doing something fundamentally wrong if you cant get in to the grid with an sl viewer you are stating the same problem in 5 posts but I will only reply to this one the help you need is all in this link
http://www.openlifegrid.com/LearningCenter/OpenlifeWiki/tabid/58/topic/Getting%20Started/Default.aspx
and what should be in target on your sl icon is this
"C:\Program Files\SecondLife\SecondLife.exe" -loginuri http://logingrid.net:8002/
And if you using Kirsten's Viewer the target icon add in should be something like this
"C:\Program Files\Kirstens Openlife R12\KirstensOpenLifeR12.exe" -loginuri http://logingrid.net:8002/
If you are still having issues then come to Chat and we can sort it out for you but please make sure you are doing all ive shown you correct
and Remember one thing Please
If your client crashes, it's important to wait a minimum of two minutes before logging back into the OL grid. Relogging too quickly will result in the client freezing and being logged out of OL as the server hasnt had time to log you out from the prevoius login.
Now lets see if it works for you now

I've posted this somewhere else, but seems to not be read ....
For those being confused by the SL opening screen when trying to connect to OpenLife, try this line:
"C:\Program Files\SecondLife\SecondLife.exe" -loginuri http://logingrid.net:8002/ -loginpage http://logingrid.net:8002/?method=login -multiple
Also, I had a lot of problems logging in, until I lowered the maximum bandwidth from 1500 to 500 kbps.
Hope this helps |
