The 3D .mesh OGRE/ReX thread! Avatar 2.0! 

Hey guys, I couldn't find any relevent information anywhere so I decided to start a main thread where we could all keep updated one what the state of ReX's support is atm. :)

Last night I tried to rez an Ogre .mesh in ReX in the .3 client, but I seemed to get automatically logged out when I try. Anybody have similar problems or workarounds? Also, the extended options checkbox under the ReX tab seems to be disabled, any way to enable this, maybe I have a setting wrong?

Hey there! I'm pretty excited about these things too. Avatar 2.0 and mesh uploading are currently present, but they only work with RealXtend's Global Authentication System. The next REX release, speculated to be around 22nd September should improve stability on these things, including the global inventory. I don't know when the GAS will be added to Openlife, but Sakai is never too far behind with these things;)

Also, it appears that the OL servers are some sort of hybrids between standard OpenSIM and RealXtend. You can upload meshes, but i've never been able to turn the "extended parameters" on in order to use them.

I did manage to get it (mesh rezzing) to work a while back with an older release from RealXtend's sourceforge file download location- but it seems to be unavailable now. I guess we'll try to keep track of what we can do with ReX in OpenLife in this thread.

If anybody's had problems using .mesh format, the OGRE website has an exporter link- the basic idea of the process is you generate an XML file from a mesh, then you take that mesh and use one of OGRE's command line tools OgreXmlConverter.exe to turn that XML file into a binary that you can upload.

Seems simple after you figure it out, but I know from a standpoint of never having used a game mesh export before, the process was new to me. Later on maybe we can cover animations and materials :) I'm getting into armatures now so I'm really excited to play with Avatar 2.0 and animation as soon as possible.

If anyone has anymore information on what you can do right now with ReX in OpenLife- please post!

RealXtend 0.31 is out :) This one improves the GAS functionality by adding goodies like world-independent IM's, global inventory and post-processing viewer effects. I hope the OpenLife beta opens soon, i'd love to give these things a try on a true grid!

Cool, cant wait to get my hands on those features:) By the way, i have a question about the beta GAS. Would it be possible at some point for avatars registered with it to access other (approved by OL) REX sims or grids, like maybe the test-grid at world.adminotech.com? Will the beta grid be an SL-style grid, or many independent sims using one authentication system? Or something in-between perhaps...

"Linden Labs provides meshes (in OBJ format), but those meshes only provide the female UV coordinates. This can cause unexpected results if you try to bake textures to the male avatar mesh.

To solve this problem we extracted the actual meshes from the Second Life® client so it would be possible to paint clothing with the correct UV coordinates. We have provided these meshes on this site as AC3D and OBJ format data files. We have also provided just the texture templates in PNG format for those of you who don't work with 3D applications. You can download all of these files from the pages linked to from the navigation bar at the top of this site.

These files include:
The female avatar
The male avatar
Skirts
Hair
And all possible morph targets for all of the above.

These are extremely helpful for making clothing especially if you are targeting non-standard avatars."

Julius, thank you SO much for these! I've been waiting to find a proper set of avatar models for a long time! It would be pretty cool if those models can be set up for in ReX, so people can adjust the "morphing" sliders in an SL fashion...

UPDATE:

 

For anyone wanting to try out all the cool features, you can register an avatar at RealXtend.net HERE. Then with the ReX viewer (i havent tested it with OpenLife but it may work, try it) you can either login to world.adminotech.com (main test server), or world.tuxtec.com (a 3rd party server that's configured to use the ReX authentication). I've tried moving things back and forth between those two servers with mixed success, python and most of the things work, so check it out.
