Terrain in a multi region 'auto cloning'

Hi All

I've been looking around the forums to see if there was a reason for this but haven't found one.

I have set up 3 other regions to add to the default to give me 4.

loaded specific terrains to individual regions with the commands: 'change-region My Island'   &   'terrain load newisland.raw'.

All works great, the terrains are changed to the regions I wanted them on but then when I restart the sim, I find that the  3 regions  default to the same terrain. =O

I guess I must be missing something, does anyone have any advice on how to keep this from happening?

Re: Terrain in a multi region 'auto cloning'

Hi, Altimar!  And welcome to OLG! :-)

Yes, there is a way.  You want to make sure that you use the following command to set the terrain file for the *specific* region you want it to apply to, individually.

Say you wanted a flat green land for My Island.  You'd type the following:

change-region MyIsland

then you'd load the terrain file:

terrain load flatgreen.raw

Then say you wanted a mountain and water terrain loaded for region 2, you'd then type:

change-region Openlife Island2

then:

terrain load mountainandwater.raw

then, you want to change your region back to the default (your start region, usually My Island), so you'd type the following command;

change-region root

And that should get you all set up :-)

Re: Terrain in a multi region 'auto cloning'

Hi Charmaine and thanks!

Thats pretty much the way I did it except I didn't do the

"then, you want to change your region back to the default (your start region, usually My Island), so you'd type the following command; change-region root"

as  I didn't change the default island's terrain, just the new 3, used the 'My Island' as an example for the command.

If I add the last command, - 'change-region root' does that 'lock' the changes or  I guess it's just to revert the terrain of the default (start region) back assuming I changed it?

I'll try this again when I get home from work and post how things went.

Thanks again.

Re: Terrain in a multi region 'auto cloning'

Yes, it sort of tells the code to end your change region terrain operation and does rather lock in the changes you've made :-)

Hope this helps.

Re: Terrain in a multi region 'auto cloning'

Hi there,

This sounds similar to an issue I have, I'm hoping  someone could help me with it.

I have 4 regions, the root region behaves normally, the 3 extra regions dont, if I manually add a hill and lake to any one region, other than the default (root), all three regions end up with a hill and a lake after reboot, so now Ive got 3 regions that all look the same, any help pleeeease?

Thanks

Cam.

Re: Terrain in a multi region 'auto cloning'

I'm baack ... =]

Well I did the whole load procedure and ended up with the same problem. =[

The default region seems to always take the change but my other 3 regions seem to end up a clone of the first after rebooting the server.

I'm using the latest standalone and assets release.

So right now I can probably only reliably run 2 regions, the default and an extra and have the terrain stay the way I left it.

I'll keep prodding around and if I get a resolution will post  back.

Re: Terrain in a multi region 'auto cloning'

I've been running V0.5.5 standalone with 9 regions in a 3 X 3 grid with a different terrain on each and never had to go back to the root region after loading the terrains. never had that problem as you describe. I suggest you look at the command window after you load one terrain and see what it comments it outputs. Also, make sure you use the shutdown command before restarting the server. You did change the UUID of each region to give them a unique UUID?

Re: Terrain in a multi region 'auto cloning'

Hi Pratyeka,

Well leave it to me to have something unusual happen with things ... =/

Here's a paste of the command window from the point when I change terrains to shutting down.
Sorry for the long post.

To shut the sim down I was using 'quit' rather than 'shutdown'
but have since used shutdown, the region UUID's are unique but the problem persists.

This is a pic after first changing terrains and logging in.

This one is after raising some land on the region to the right.

and this after shutting down the sim and relogging.

I don't see a "change-region root" in that output as a last procedure.

Could that be it?

Hi Macca, I guess in this instance I may have forgotten to finish with that, which would make me look like a noodle.

=p After Charmaine explained the point about adding that after the terrain changes I did use it, and had the same problem.

I tried twice more using the complete command set since your post and still have the same issue.

Re: Terrain in a multi region 'auto cloning'

Alt has asked me to post here what seems to have solved her problems:  get new, unique fresh IDs for her additional regions from:

http://www.famkruithof.net/uuid/uuidgen

Please make sure you note how you wanted your terrain and it also wouldn't hurt to save any builds on additional island to xml in case they need restoration.

Re: Terrain in a multi region 'auto cloning'

I origionally read Sakai's post about setting up multiple terrains and used some of the UUID's from there and yes they were all unique.

Guess they didn't quite get along with each other.

I would recommend that perhaps his post incorporate that webpage that generates the UUID's, it's a good resource. ;]
