Getting Started

How to login to the OpenlifeGrid.

1.  Registering your Avatar

(this is not secondlife if you have an SL AV it won't work here)

Create your Avatar's unique First & Last Name in the
Avatar Toolbox.

Select your starting region (Your 'HOME').

Enter a password, confirm it. And you're ready to connect!

Changing Home is accessed by Avatar Toolbox

This is done by clicking the little pencil icon and chose the home region you want remember to press update at the bottom of the page now your home region is made permanent or until you change the region to somewhere else,

It is always very handy for hopping around the grid to visit regions that are further away but you DO have to log out and in again takes about 30secs to update from the webpage avatar toolbox to the viewer so you can login to the new region home you’ve selected and you can change it back if you want to another Region etc Remember you must log out and change your home region for this to work .

2.  Connecting to OpenLifeGrid:

Method 1:

Using A Suggested Viewer:

KirstenLee Viewer (Currently R14)

  • Download and Install the KirstenLee Viewer from here.

  • Unzip, And run the KirstenleeViewer .exe file this will launch the startup screen ready for login with username (First Name + Last Name) and password that you made in the Avatar Toolbox.

  • That's it. You're in.

RealXtend

  • Download and Install the new ReXViewer OpenlifeEdition from here.

  • Enter Your whole Avatar name you made in the Avatar Toolbox where it says 'username', complete the password field and select Connect To: Openlife Grid.

  • Now click Connect and you're in!

Method 2:

Using the SecondLife Viewer

  • Assuming you already have the secondlife client. Available from www.secondlife.com

  • Connecting with Windows:

  • Create a new shortcut, choose the secondlife.exe as the target and add

  • -loginuri http://logingrid.net:8002

  • After creating your new shortcut with this extra line, if you were to check the target of the shortcut it should look something like this.

"C:\Program Files\SecondLife\SecondLife.exe" -loginuri http://logingrid.net:8002/

Remember the OpenlifeGrid is NOT a part of Linden Labs Second Life, so you must register your own account with http://openlifegrid.com Second Life Login will not work, and our OpenlifeGrid logins do not work in Secondlife etc.

Please note logingrid.net is the Openlife Grid login url.

Connecting with Linux:
secondlife -loginuri http://logingrid.net:8002/

Connecting with MAC:
/Applications/Second\ Life.app/Contents/MacOS/Second\ Life -loginuri http://logingrid.net:8002/

If you want to connect with a Mac, right click (or Control click with a one-button mouse) on the Second Life icon, and choose "Open Package Contents" from the drop down menu.

In the window that opens when you do that, open the Contents folder, and then the Resources folder. (NOT the MacOS folder.)

Inside the Resources folder you'll find (among many other things,) a document called "arguments.txt"

Open that document in TextEdit (or any other word processor.) It might have things in it, or it may be completely blank. It doesn't matter.

Paste this line in, under anything that's there.

-loginuri http://logingrid.net:8002/

Save and close. Close any open folder windows. (Just to keep things tidy.)

Now, when you double click that Second Life icon, you will connect to the OpenLife grid.

(You might want to change the name under that icon to something like "OpenLife", just to avoid confusion. You can safely do so; it won't affect your ability to log in.)

Just thought this might be helpful to other Mac users!

FAQ

Client continually freezes up and disconnects:

If your client crashes, it's important to wait a minimum of two minutes before logging back into the OL grid.  Relogging too quickly will result in the client freezing and being logged out of OL as the server hasnt had time to log you out from the prevoius login.

I Connect to OL and get waiting for region connection or similar error and you can’t get in world?

Change your login Region

Either go to region tool box and change your login region or in the Kirsten Ol Viewer go to Edit menu preferences general and turn on (show start location on start-up screen) then just below your login name you can see a box showing my last location or home set it too Type Region Name and then enter the name of another region

Whilst we can not always say every region will be up without any errors there is normally one or two that can play up if you come in to chat on the website and I am sure someone can tell you the regions that are logging fine and maybe it just needs a restart so it help us all to make the grid run smooth and error free

We are in Alpha/Beta stage but we don’t want you to not enjoy your time here because of an error on one region

What connection speed should I use?

Use the file below to test the connection speed to OLG Grid
Download and watch the average speed (please turn off any download accelerators)
Times the download average speed by 8
So if your speed is 56.6kb a second times that by 8
EG: 56.00kbs X 8 = 448
Or
EG: 100kbs X 8 = 800

So set your bandwidth slider in preferences /network to around the number you have calculated

A General good balance is Between 500 - 600 kbs

***for my testing and reduction in packet loss I matched the down load speed-Sly Bosshart

Can I use the Rex Viewer with Mac or Linux?

Not at this time, no.
