The Horyuji temple image hall, the kondo, is the world's oldest surviving wooden building. Although somewhat altered, the structure retains its graceful but muscular forms. The tapered pillars create an effective transition to the delicate brackets, and the first story harmoniously diminishes to the second story. Following Chinese models, the builders used ceramic tiles on the roof.
