Since joining Second Life, I've had the desire to setup and do my own thing.  It started with a little plot, then another little plot, then skyboxes over the parcels, and a large spread in a new SL region.  Everytime I've looked to buy in SL, the thought about my own region or island would always creep in.  The desire to have the sweet luxurious elbow room of an entire sim.  Always I fended the implse off because of the cost.   Well, I've done it now.  I've finally given in to the desire for open space and have purchased my own region.

I'd like to say that I was pioneer as SL can online and the idea of the Metaverse started it's journey out of Snow Crash and onto a server farm.  That isn't the case though.  Even in the cutting edge world of OpenSim, and the expansion beyond SL, I'm still not a pathfinder.  However, as a researcher in the field of information systems, I am being afforded a glimpse at the expansion of "Grid" (although I really like the term Metaverse) beyond pure corporate holdings.  This analogy works much better if you know that at one time, Kentucky (USA) was the "wild west".

One of my earliest observations about SL and Web3D was that if it couldn't escape from the relm of propriatary server farms, it would never survive to become the next generation of the web.  Well, Web3D is off the farm and I'm off to see what it's like when a virtual world emerges (this isn't the only OpenSim grid I've joined).

Sincerely,

Dr. B
